Sunday Workshop
Back to
the Nest
Most of our snowbirds (or is it bunnies?) have returned from their winter homes. The Nolans, Waltons, Lawrences, Greenlicks, Bob Selberg and Dorothy Shenkan, Alyce Grissom, June Hensala and numerous others are all back and it is great to have them.
Sunday Workshop
The Sunday workshops have proven to be a huge success. Each lesson, we have a diversified and fun group who all seem to have a wonderful time. It is nice to be able to sit down over a meal and get better acquainted with everyone. If you have not joined us for one of these sessions plan to do so in the near future. Hopefully, you will not only learn something about a specific bridge concept but also enjoy a great lunch and perhaps meet someone new.
Summer Youth
Bridge Camp
After running an ad in the Oregonian's summer camp section, contacting numerous schools, printing up and passing out flyers, Ouida got only two children interested in joining a summer youth bridge camp. Part of the reason is that each district in the Portland area has its own superintendent, who requires that you get their permission prior to distributing any forms to the schools in their district. Upon approval, each superintendent has his/her own rules about what the flyer must say, and all want a disclaimer on the flyer indicating that the school has nothing to do with the bridge camp. Ouida has passed all of this along to the district level who will attempt to do more advertising through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to get information out regarding scholarships available to students who participate in this wonderful game of bridge.
South WaterFront
Our first game at the South WaterFront was held on Monday, June 21. We had five tables and met a lot of new bridge players. This is truly a fun and friendly game. There is paid parking in the lot across the street from the club ($1.00 per hour or $5.00 all day), and a couple of great restaurants in the area if you want dinner or a little liquid solace after the game. Check it out some Monday afternoon. Our temporary quarters are located on the Plaza Courtyard adjacent to the entrance of the John Ross building, 3623 SW River Parkway (at the corner of SW River Parkway and Gaines). Need a partner? Call 503-919-1052. We guarantee you will have a good time and enjoy meeting the players from this community.
Ouida's Classes
Ouida's Beginner Part II lessons covering today's basic conventions will commence Wednesday evening, July 7, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Eastside Club. If you plan to attend these lessons, make sure your name is on Ouida's list as there are a limited number of spaces available. Ouida will also start a series of beginner lessons at the South Waterfront Club; however, this schedule has not been finalized. Check the website ("Click On The Dog!") for updates.
