Heartfelt relief
Both Jim McKeon and Greta Gonzales underwent open heart surgery recently, and both are already back at the bridge table looking and playing better than they did before!! Welcome back. We missed you both as well as your wonderful sense of humors.
Ouida's classes
Ouida's Beginner Bridge class, which commences Monday, January 11, is full. If there is sufficient demand another class for beginners will be given on Tuesday mornings. The beginner Part II lessons dealing principally with conventions and play of the hand will be given Wednesday evenings, January 13, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Anyone interested in taking these classes should either email at Trumpuonline.com or telephone the club at (503) 252-1318
Paul's classes
In January Paul's lessons will resume. These lessons -- for advanced beginners and intermediate players -- will focus on hand evaluation, takeout doubles, card combinations and percentage play, and opening leads (especially the thought process behind the leads). Please go to the "Lessons" page for topics to be covered and times.
Connie carousing in Cuba
One of our newer players, Connie Cleaton, recently visited Cuba with her church group. She enjoyed a wonderful time with the Cuban people. Connie indicated the trip was both fun and educational. The only problem was -- No one ever heard of the game of bridge!! Next time you are at the table with Connie ask her to share some of her Cuban experiences.
Our club is growing!
During calendar year 2009, we have added more than 30 new ACBL members to our club roster. The vast majority of these people are new to the game of duplicate bridge. It is satisfying to see all the new friendships and partnerships being formed at the bridge table and extremely gratifying to both Paul and Ouida to watch them progress into accomplished bridge players. The laughter throughout the room on Tuesdays, Friday nights, and Saturdays during our limited games is just exactly what this wonderful passion of ours is meant to be -- just plain fun! (By the way, we also laugh a lot during our open games throughout the week.)
Walker Swiss
and more!
During the months of January and February we will be holding many extra point games as well as our Annual Walker Swiss Team game on Sunday, February 14th. The game is in memory of a couple that played at our club regularly. On retirement, they embarked on the vacation of their dreams and were aboard the Egyptian Air flight that went down over the Atlantic. The event is a two-session Swiss Team game with dinner served between sessions. If you plan to attend this game, please sign up with Paul at the front desk as space is limited.
